Women have more options than ever in breast enlargement surgery. New scientific advances now allow women to choose insertion of breast implants from a distant location so as to not leave behind any scarring near the breast. If you're trying to decide which type of surgery is right for you, check out this quick list of pros and cons of each.
Traditional Surgery
Traditional surgery offers several advantages. It's one of the most versatile methods of inserting breast implants, because surgeons can perform the incision on the breast itself, under it, or next to it near the armpit.
Because of the local insertion points, larger implants can be inserted. Women who go with this version of the procedure can also choose between saline implants and silicone implants, which allows for a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and a chance to choose to decide which one has the preferred feeling when touched.
Umbilical Surgery
Alternatively, breast implants can now be inserted via a very small incision on or near the navel. This means that any scar left behind is very far away from your breasts, so it doesn't give away the fact that you've gotten breast implants.
Umbilical surgery is also less invasive than traditional surgery. A smaller incision is used because the implants are inserted laparoscopically. However, due to the smaller space, only saline implants can be used. The implant has to be filled after it's been inserted, so silicone implants aren't possible with this method. In addition, extremely large implants typically can't be inserted this way, as even with the ability to be filled with saline, there's too much material to readily move through the body laparascopically.
How to Choose
It can be difficult to decide which type of surgery is right for you, so consider the advantages of each. If it's important to you to have a minor change in bust size that you want to appear as natural as possible, umbilical surgery may be best for you.
Alternatively, if you prefer a larger boost and want to be able to choose the most natural-feeling type of implant for you, going with the traditional surgery is the way to go.
Ultimately, the choice is up to a matter of preference with each woman. Both methods will allow you to dramatically change how you look for the better with very little downtime. If you're still not sure which one to pick, talk to your surgeon to find out more about what breast augmentation procedures entail.
